Hershey Medical Center Centerview Parking Garage Phase II
The Phase II project consisted of a six-level, 935-car precast concrete addition to the Centerview Parking Garage.
Soil conditions at the project site consist of a medium dense silty sand and sandy silt underlain by pinnacled limestone bedrock ranging in depth from 1 ft below First Floor Elevation (FFE) to more than 140 ft. The major challenge was to improve soil bearing capacity, provide settlement compatibility with the existing micropile-supported P1 parking garage, and prevent surface water infiltration into shallow pinnacled bedrock areas without project cost overruns.
A total of 400 high capacity and high modulus Geopier® elements were installed using Cement Treated Aggregate (CTA). The CTA consisted of 2A aggregate with five percent cement added on site. A comprehensive lab test program was conducted to verify the strength of CTA and provide quality control tests during installation of the Geopier elements.
