DESCRIPTION

This project consisted of the relocation of The Home Depot Cherry Hill store to the site of the Garden State Racetrack.

CHALLENGE

The new store location was the former Garden State Park location where existing pile caps were left in place resulting in a hard-soft subgrade support for the building pad. Efforts to design a store utilizing the existing piles proved too expensive. Home Depot used Geopier Intermediate Foundations on three previous stores and requested a Geopier design for the project. A pre-construction modulus test was conducted to verify the Geopier design.

The project site was underlain by 8 to 10 feet of miscellaneous fill and Marl (sand, gravel, clayey silt). The miscellaneous fill was over-excavated and replaced with a compacted recycled concrete pad by the developer.

SOLUTION

A total of 275 Geopier elements were installed to provide foundation support and settlement control. Geopier Intermediate Foundations were installed in advance of the General Contractor selection enabling the fast track project to stay within budget and on schedule.

Rapid Impact Compaction (RIC) was also used at the relocated Home Depot store to verify the integrity of the developer installed pad site.  RIC ground improvement was conducted on 10-foot centers throughout the 155,000 sf building footprint to identify any areas of the building pad that were not sufficiently rigid and prone to future settlement. Nearly all RIC impact craters were less than 6 inches indicating an acceptable subgrade. Only localized areas were found where RIC craters were in excess of 6 inches and less than 12 inches.  It was judged that these localized areas would be remediated during the final grading and compaction of the floor slab subgrade. Rapid Impact Compaction verified that the developer installed building pad would be rigid enough to distribute loads without detrimental slab settlements eliminating any need for slab support.
