JMU Mason Street Parking Garage
The Mason Street Parking Garage is a new 307,000 square foot freestanding, five-level parking structure that can accommodate approximately 1,000 vehicles.
The building site has a 16-foot slope from Mason Street down to the hotel site, allowing vehicular entry/exit from two levels. The project is located in a Karst environment and soil conditions generally consist of 3 to 6 feet of very stiff fat clay fill underlain by residual lean to fat clay followed by limestone bedrock encountered at depths ranging from 1 to 36 feet below grade. Groundwater was encountered in one boring at a depth of 34 feet.
The project schedule was non-negotiable so communication was a high priority for the project.
Due to the Karst environment, the use of 121, 30-inch diameter Geopier® elements using Cement Treated Aggregate proved to be the best solution for foundation support.
At the completion of the project, the facility was delivered within budget and ahead of schedule.
