KIPP DC: LEAP Academy
Washington D.C.
Description
KIPP, Knowledge Is Power Program, is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools in under-resourced communities throughout the United States. This school is the fourth in the District of Columbia.
Challenge
The soils on the site consisted of loose granular soils interbedded with soft cohesive soils to depths of 13.5 ft to 16.5 ft below the ground surface. These loose upper soils were underlain by dense to very dense sands and clays.
Solution
Due to the soil conditions, Impact Pier elements proved to be the best solution allowing for installation of Piers in caving soil conditions and high groundwater while providing the high capacity needed to support the heavy loads.
