Motiva Sewaren Terminal Expansions
Motiva constructed a 70-unit railcar ethanol offloading facility. The expanded ethanol off loading terminal is capable of handling two 80-100 car trains daily.
During construction, organic silts were encountered beneath miscellaneous fill requiring special foundation support.
Grouted Impact Pier elements were required to provide foundation support. The Impact Pier elements were installed without augering or casing using a filled open pipe. Once at design depth, the mandrel pipe was filled with grout and stone, raised three to four ft then lowered using vibration and downward hydraulic force. The open-graded stone was compacted to one ft lift resulting in a 20-inch diameter Impact Pier. A stiffer Impact Pier elements and limit contamination migration derived from grouting the stone aggregate.
A total of 192 grouted Impact Pier elements were installed in two weeks to keep the fast track project on schedule. Based on the client’s previous success, another 28 Impact Piers were installed at a later date to reinforce soils for two transmix towers as part of the on-going terminal expansion. Additionally two years later, 1,218 grouted Impact Pier elements were installed as part of a major expansion that increased the terminal capacity from one to two million gallons per day.
