Virginia Tech – Brodie Hall

Blacksburg, VA

DESCRIPTION

The new Corps of Cadets residence hall on the Upper Quad contains 234 dorm rooms with study and lounge spaces on each level. The 101,422-square-foot building has five above-ground floors, a basement, and a room for storing the corps’ cannon, Skipper.  It, plus a second residence hall, yet to be named, will each have room for approximately 1,100 students, and eventually will replace Brodie Hall, Monteith Hall, Rasche Hall, and Thomas Hall.

CHALLENGE

Project Challenges included:

  • Heavily Loaded Mat Foundations next to smaller footings
  • Excess Settlement Potential from Adjacent Footing Stresses
  • Deep weak soil profile
  • Variable depth to a competent soil/rock layer
  • Tight Settlement tolerances < ¾ inch total

Brodie Hall-01

SOLUTION

Geopier Rigid Inclusions – Cement Treated Aggregate (CTA) Geopier® elements installed to depths up to 55 feet, minimized footing settlement to < ¾ inch of footing loaded up to 3600 kips, and eliminated adjacent footing stresses by providing a low compression Geopier element that transferred stress to the weathered rock profile.

Geopier Rammed Aggregate Pier® elements– provided economical support and controlled settlement to < ¾ inch for the lightly loaded footings.

Ductile Iron Piles– Provided an economical solution for areas where pier depths were 55 to 75 feet deep, by transferring loads down to the weathered rock layer thus eliminating adjacent footing stresses and controlling settlement to below < ¾ inch.
