Western PA School for the Deaf New Dormitory
This project included the demolition of an existing dormitory structure and the construction of a new 30,000 sf three-story dormitory structure in the same location. The dormitory includes three wings and a below ground basement under the middle wing.
Pursuing LEED Certification
The existing, uncontrolled fill was not suitable for supporting the proposed building foundation. Other encounters included dealing with the grade change for the below ground basement and the phasing coordination required for the new fill being placed on the site.
GeoStructures was selected to design and install a Geopier® system and overcome the challenges involved with foundation support. 332 twenty-four inch diameter Geopier elements were installed to an average depth of 13.5 ft. The Geopier elements provided the necessary bearing capacity of up to 4,000 psf for the column footings, the wall footings and the slab on grade while limiting the total settlement to one inch and the differential settlement to half an inch. Money and time were saved by utilizing the Geopier elements.
