DESCRIPTION
Target Stores, Inc constructed a 127,000 sf retail store at the Medley Centre shopping mall. The project site was the location of a former industrial plant building.
CHALLENGE
Old foundations and slabs were encountered on the northern half of the building footprint. Debris laden fill underlain by clean sand fill was encountered at depths ranging from 12 to 25 ft.
SOLUTION
Rapid Impact Compaction (RIC) ground improvement was used to densify the various fill materials and provide a uniform subgrade for the Target foundations and floor slab. Depending on weather conditions, production rates ranged from 4500 to 7500 sf per day. The use of RIC eliminated the need for over-excavation and replacement keeping the fast track project on schedule and within budget in spite of the winter construction.
