DESCRIPTION

Metropolitan, located adjacent to uptown Charlotte, is the redevelopment of the site that once was Charlotte’s oldest enclosed mall, Midtown Square. Metropolitan offers retail, residential, dining and entertainment in a pedestrian-friendly, urban mixed-use environment. It is Charlotte’s first urban mixed-use community.

CHALLENGE

The generalized subsurface profile consisted of loose to soft existing fill and alluvial soils to depths of 20 ft underlain by medium to very dense residual soils and partial weathered rock.

SOLUTION

Over 2,100 Geopier® elements were installed over the course of two years for support of the spread foundations of a five level parking deck (column and wall loads to 1500 kips and 25 kpf, respectively), two-story retail center (column loads to 400 kips), and two 3 to 4-story retail/residential buildings (column loads to 1000 kips). Depending on the soil profile, the Geopier technology supported spread footings designed for bearing pressures of up to 6000 psf. Recycled Crushed Concrete (RCC) was used in the Geopier construction to support the LEED® initiative.
