DESCRIPTION
A two-story, 110,000 sf community center and sports complex consisting of an indoor ice arena, basketball courts, pool and other multi-purpose space.
CHALLENGE
Soil conditions consist of 2 to 4 ft of soft clayey silt (with varying amounts of sand) fill underlain by approximately 3 to 13 ft of loose to medium dense gravel with varying amount of silt and silty sand, underlain by stiff to very stiff clayey silt to the maximum depths explored of 50 ft. Groundwater was encountered at approximately 5 ft below grade.
SOLUTION
The Impact® System was recommended by the geotechnical engineer as an alternate to a typical driven pile foundation system. A total of 430 twenty-inch diameter Impact elements were installed to depths of 16 ft below the foundation base.
