DESCRIPTION
The Hockessin Athletic Club consists of a 110,000 sf health club and pool complex. A two level parking deck is located on club property and serves users of nearby Tweed’s Park and the athletic club.
CHALLENGE
Soil conditions at the project site consist of silt and sand fill to depths ranging from 1 to 3 ft. The fill is underlain by alluvial silts, sands and clays to depths of 15 to 40 ft below ground surface. Ground water was encountered approximately 18 ft below the ground surface.
SOLUTION
A total of 332 displacement Impact Pier elements (no casing) were installed to depths of 13 to 16 ft to provide a 5 ksf allowable bearing capacity for the parking deck and portions of the athletic club where unsuitable soils were encountered.
